Our planter uses spoons to pickup the individual garlic cloves and drop them into the soil opener. This makes planting much easier but also means that most of the cloves end up planted on their side.
Ideally you want the clove tips pointed upwards, but we’ve found that the majority of the cloves end up turning themselves as they grow. This means that the mature plants end up properly aligned by the time bulbs begin to form in summer.
